Case Study: How Redbox is using its physical retail box to reach digital users

Thanks to the pandemic, the already heated so-called streaming wars have reached a fever pitch, with more platforms looking to challenge streaming giants like Netflix and Hulu. 

Not to be left out of the conversation, Redbox has transformed itself from a DVD rental company that’s reliant on foot traffic in physical stores to a multifaceted entertainment company. To do it, the company leverages its more than 40,000 physical kiosks to reach digital users.

As a result, the company has built out a loyalty program that has scaled to 39 million members. At the Digiday CMO Summit, which took place in January, Jason Kwong, Redbox’s chief digital and strategy officer, detailed how the brand is using that loyalty program to better target its audience.

“It’s really become a way for us to obviously build that relationship with our consumers, get them to be marketable,” said Kwong. “On top of that, it gives us a currency to be able to help us incentivize behavior with those consumers.”

Why now?

Redbox was considered a disruptive innovation when it launched 20 years ago, allowing people to avoid lines and rent a movie with the simple swipe of a credit card. But as people spend less time shopping in physical stores and more time consuming content online, Redbox needed to maintain its competitive edge. 

“Knowing that physical [retail] is in decline as people continue to evolve toward digital, our argument is that Redbox has a very unique customer set,” Kwong said, in reference to the brand’s target audience, who tend to be later adopters of technology and value-conscious.

How was it executed?

How does Redbox move away from just being a DVD rental business into becoming this multifaceted entertainment company? That’s the question that was top of mind for Kwong. 

Redbox now offers digital rental services, streaming services and soon, the ability for people to subscribe to third-party digital services. There’s also a label called Redbox Entertainment that’s essentially Redbox’s studio model, where the company is acquiring and releasing content. Customer movement is tracked through a loyalty program, which currently counts at least 39 million members. 

And from a rental perspective, Kwong said Redbox is able continue learning what shoppers are watching, allowing Redbox to create programming around that, driving hours, frequency and stickiness with its consumers across digital services.  

“We’ve used loyalty points to drive [sign ups] when we launched our television services and our AVOD [advertising-based video on demand] services,” he said. “We use loyalty points or a free night at the box to try to turn people’s behavior into transactional to really grow those businesses.”

There’s also a subscription service in which customers can earn loyalty points for signing up, per Kwong. “That helps to drive that ecosystem and that behavior,” he said. “They can leverage those points to offset future rentals.”

Findings

Unlike other streaming service titans, Redbox isn’t looking to snap up the competition’s audience. Instead, Kwong said, Redbox hopes to gamify its loyalty program to super-serve the customers the brand already has. 

“Frankly, if you look across the digital entertainment landscape, or the entertainment landscape, we’re one of the only ones that do physical, digital transactions as well as ad-supported, and soon to be subscription as well,” he said. 

Basically, the more customer touchpoints the entertainment company rolls out, the better it can know its audience and serve up relevant content. “It’s really about capturing customers and giving them that experience by giving them more choice,” Kwong said.

Advice

Redbox’s goal also isn’t to dominate the so-called streaming wars. Instead, Kwong says the company is finding areas to differentiate itself in a crowded digital landscape and highlight those areas for customers.

How Redbox wins is by serving the customer base that the company has been building for at least 20 years, he said. “It’s carving out our piece in the world and less about having to take everyone else down,” he added.

Where do you go from here?

According to Kwong, there’s still more that Redbox the entertainment company can offer to its customers. Later this year, it plans to launch SVOD, or subscription video on demand, channels. Redbox will also continue to grow its ad-supported business, content library and channels on AVOD.

‘Winning is part of the culture’: A Q&A with Leonard Edwards, Evil Geniuses’ new head of global partnerships

Earlier this month, esports organization Evil Geniuses injected a shot of traditional-sports experience into its front office with the hiring of Leonard Edwards, a veteran sports executive who formerly worked on partnerships for teams such as the New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers. As EG’s new head of global partnerships, Edwards looks to bring his years of sports experience to bear within the growing arena of competitive gaming.

Edwards isn’t just an experienced negotiator of sports partnerships — he’s also a lifelong gaming fan who was once addicted to the thrill of competition. As a passionate Madden NFL player on the PlayStation 3, he even managed to achieve the countrywide No. 9 ranking. “I do remember, in 2009, beating the No. 3 Madden gamer on the PS3,” Edwards said. “That was probably the height of my gaming career.”

Now, as partnerships lead for an esports organization that financiers valued at $255 million last year, Edwards will look to push his gaming career to new heights, albeit in a very different arena. Digiday spoke to Edwards to learn how he will apply his traditional-sports knowledge to his new role at a leading esports company.

This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.

Why did you make the jump from traditional sports to esports?

When you think about sports, and working for [a] professional sports team, there are a lot of different restrictions and regulations on what you can do from a partnership standpoint. When I was with Dignitas [a longstanding esports organization fielding teams in games such as League of Legends and Counter-Strike], I loved having the ability to go wider and broader; you can be very open-minded and open-ended in terms of where you can take partnerships. I like that it was a playground where you can touch consumers that are not necessarily looking to be touched.

During your time with the 76ers, the NBA team acquired the esports organization Dignitas. What was your impact on Dignitas’ partnerships following the acquisition?

I was part of the team that actually built the strategies for partnerships when we acquired the team — Team Dignitas at the time — and we started building out the entire internal operations: our systems, our strategies, and then also how to bring in partnerships. I was very instrumental with Buffalo Wild Wings and Bubba Burger, in terms of applying them to the space. Obviously, the team went through a total refresh and rebrand, since it was under a new ownership group. I started to learn more about the Gen Z space and how esports works, more about the tournaments. 

How does your experience in the traditional sports world transfer to esports partnerships?

Coming from the NHL, the NBA, having spent time in NASCAR and worked in baseball and the NFL, I know that each of the leagues are very competitive about being innovative and coming up with really good concepts. There are things that may not necessarily transfer over to esports. But applying the business acumen that I’ve learned from being in traditional sports will help. They’re not apples to apples; there are so many moving pieces in esports, so many different teams, so many different games, and you have to be very creative.

In this era of esports organizations becoming entertainment studios and holding companies, you believe having winning teams is still important?

Absolutely. That’s what we embody; we want to win. You can definitely still build a good brand without winning, but winning just takes you to the next level. If you look at traditional sports, where I come from, a lot of brands want to associate themselves with winners. And so, where we see ourselves growing from a partnership standpoint — holistically, winning is part of the culture that we are trying to build.

What are your plans for Evil Geniuses’ brand partnerships moving forward?

If you look at traditional sports, and you look at esports — I mean, there are still some great brands in esports, and the leagues are bringing some really amazing brands into this space. But from having conversations with brands, they’re just trying to figure out where they want to fit within this space because it’s still so new to them. In esports, it has to be authentic — it can’t be something that’s just plug-and-play, or gimmicky.

We think of it from this perspective: When the industry is growing, from a brand perspective, they’re creating jobs that are specifically for esports. I was looking at a brand executive earlier before this call, and his title is head of esports. That’s key, when you have those types of positions at brands. So there are a lot of different avenues that we can tie into.

How Abercrombie & Fitch is using TikTok to reintroduce the brand and ‘reflect back who our consumer is today’

Abercrombie & Fitch is using TikTok to reintroduce the brand to millennial and Gen Z consumers. 

The 130-year-old brand is running a paid and organic ad strategy on the platform as well as working with TikTok creators to do so. The reintroduction follows Abercrombie & Fitch’s overall brand transformation in recent years as it has slowly shed its reputation of preppy exclusivity for early Aughts teenagers to become a more inclusive brand aimed at twentysomethings seeking fashionable basics. 

That transformation, which came about under CEO Fran Horowitz, who joined in 2017, had to come first and be seen as authentic before the brand could start advertising those changes on a platform like TikTok, explained Megan Brophy, senior director of marketing at Abercrombie & Fitch. 

“It takes time for customers to rediscover the brand and to trust that [the transformation] is authentic and will stick around,” said Brophy, adding that Abercrombie & Fitch has expanded its product sizing and worked to be more representative of the diversity of its customers in models and elsewhere, given that “diversity can’t just show up in one space” but rather has to be in everything the brand does. “This has been a several-year journey that people have started to notice more recently.” 

During the second quarter of 2021, Abercrombie & Fitch began working with Gen-Z consultancy IF7 to tap into the growing TikTok audience and tout its new more inclusive brand identity. To get its message out to a wide variety of TikTok audiences as well as showcase the diversity of the brand’s intended audience now, Abercrombie & Fitch and IF7 worked with fashion influencers as well as a number of different creators including dancers, chefs and comedians, among others, according to Michelle McAlear, COO and co-founder of IF7. 

“We moved budgets [to TikTok] for advertising and talent,” said Brophy. “We connected with talent to reflect back who our consumer is today. We are trying to look for and find talent in all walks of life to showcase who Abercrombie is today.” 

Rather than telling them specifically what to post, the brand and consultancy “give creators an overarching creative strategy,” said McAlear, empowering them to create TikToks for their channels as well as for Abercrombie & Fitch’s TikTok. 

“We fine-tune how we work with creators as we go,” said Brophy. “We work with creators each month, watch what’s performing, what’s working and what’s not. Then we stick with certain talent and creators who are consistent with performance and bring in new ones to keep diversity up. [The number of creators] is always in flux.” 

Neither Abercrombie & Fitch nor IF7 would say how much the brand is spending on advertising or creators on TikTok. However, Brophy acknowledged that “TikTok is getting a lot of dollars and attention” now as the brand leans on the platform to help communicate its transformation to its target audience. 

During the first nine months of 2021 Abercrombie & Fitch spent $25.9 million on media, per Kantar, down slightly from the $26.8 million it spent on media in 2020. Those figures don’t include what the brand spent on social channels, as Kantar does not track that spending. 

Turning to TikTok to help change brand perception may become more common among major marketers, according to industry analysts who said that Abercrombie & Fitch’s isn’t alone in using the platform to do so. 

“Brands are turning to TikTok to appeal to a different audience,” said Danielle Wiley, CEO of influencer marketing shop Sway Group. “It gives them the opportunity to change their image. If they were considered stuffy, their presence on the platform can change that perception and project a brand image that is more fun and youthful.” 

Aside from changing brand perception, Wiley said she expects more brands will also take a more diverse approach to influencers on TikTok in the coming months. “People are tired of the ‘perfect’ influencer,” she added. “They want more authenticity and realness. TikTok helps to convey the image that a brand is for everybody and not only the ones that are ‘perfect.’”

Media Briefing: How the AP and The Washington Post are staffing up to step up their climate coverage

In this week’s Media Briefing, media reporter Sara Guaglione looks at what the AP and The Washington Post plan to do with the 40-plus climate journalists they have set out to hire.

Rising climate

The key hits:

  • The AP is creating a standalone desk for climate coverage, hiring roughly 20 journalists based in Africa, Brazil, India and the U.S., thanks to over $8 million in funding from five philanthropic organizations.
  • The Washington Post is adding more than 20 new positions to its coverage of climate and extreme weather, including two editors and six reporters, writers, columnists and meteorologists, as well as three editors, six reporters and five designers and producers on the climate visual team.
  • Both the AP and the Post said the expanded teams will help produce more visual, data-driven and explanatory stories on climate, with local and global lenses on the topic.
  • The expanded climate coverage could help the news outlets to appeal particularly to younger audiences.

The Washington Post and the AP announced this month that they are each planning to hire over 20 new journalists on the climate beat, specifically to produce more visual and data-driven stories. This comes after a boost in climate coverage leading up to the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) last fall and increases in advertiser requests for publishers’ climate and sustainability content. 

The AP and the Post aren’t alone in their ambitions to produce more climate journalism. A number of publishers are currently hiring for the climate and sustainability beat, including Yahoo, The New York Times, TechCrunch, Gannett, The Guardian and The 19th. And in the past two years, publishers like the FT and Bloomberg have launched hubs dedicated to climate and sustainability coverage. The Economist produced an eight-episode, climate change-focused podcast in September. Many hosted virtual events timed around COP26.

Despite the growing attention to this beat, there remains room for improvement. According to Reuters Institute’s 2022 Digital News Report, only a third of publishers surveyed (34%) rated climate news coverage as good enough (29% said it was poor). News editors cited the difficulty of getting audiences to pay attention to a story that moves slowly and can make readers feel depressed — and publishers struggle with the cost of hiring specialist journalists to tell a complex story that doesn’t have many easy solutions.

The AP creates a climate desk for cross-collaboration

In December, the AP tapped Peter Prengaman to be its climate and environment news director, a newly created position funded by the Rockefeller Foundation in which he will lead the news organization’s plans for a dedicated climate desk. When fully staffed, it’ll include editors running accountability news, collaborations with other organizations, a photo editor, a video editor and a dedicated data team. The AP has already hired a reporter based in Africa and expects to soon hire a reporter in the Amazon and in India, said AP deputy managing editor Sarah Nordgren. 

The additional staff will “enhance our data analysis, data coverage, accountability reporting, policy reporting, inequity reporting… It will enable us to help the entire AP implicate climate into their own coverage, whether it’s fast fashion or the notion of Olympic skiers not having enough snow to train on,” she said. Some of those on the new team will be tasked with building and examining databases around climate issues, while others will be focused on policy and watching state legislatures, Nordgren said.

The climate desk can also serve as a resource to the rest of the AP’s staff. “We want people to think aggressively about the intersection of climate to their beat,” Nordgren said. The desk will cover the impacts of climate change on society, such as in food, migration, housing and the economy — from local and global levels, Nordgren said.

The AP is also doing more internal training on this beat across its newsroom so its journalists “feel confident with some of the complexities of climate change,” Nordgren said. Prengaman and a few of the AP’s climate experts hosted an internal Q&A with global staff on Feb. 3 to discuss the AP’s coverage, story ideas and opportunities in this beat to grow. Nordgren said they are in the “nascent stages of planning several specific training sessions” on topics like what net zero means and how to cover dramatic weather events, and the outlet will bring in outside experts to lead some of the sessions.

The Post to double its climate team (again)

In October, Krissah Thompson, managing editor of diversity and inclusion at the Post (who also oversees its climate coverage), told Digiday that the Post’s climate team had doubled since 2018, to include 10 reporters and three editors. This latest hiring goal will more than double that team again. Two roles are based overseas, one likely in India and the other still to be determined, and the rest will be based in the U.S., primarily in Washington, D.C.

While many of the roles are still taking “shape,” the new hires will focus on producing more visual and data-driven trackers and stories, explanatory coverage and content that can be distributed on social media, Thompson said in an interview for this article. They will also add to the Post’s coverage of extreme weather, innovations happening in climate science and tracking commitments made to the United Nations, like reducing emissions to net zero.

“We are taking a step back and doing more of that explanatory and utility reporting, tracking what is happening in the climate in a way that shows our readers over time visually and with data,” Thompson said.

Climate content could draw younger readers to the Post

The increased investment in the climate beat can help the Post’s editorial strategy in two areas where it’s struggling: attracting younger readers and expanding beyond news and politics coverage. It’s no secret that, after 2020, traffic took a dive for many news publishers, likely a result of reader fatigue around coronavirus news.

The Washington Post’s Next Generation team, a company-wide task force created last August dedicated to increasing the Post’s audience of young readers, worked with the climate team to produce the “Climate Diaries,” a new, limited-run editorial series announced Wednesday by the Post. It’s the latest climate-focused editorial initiative from the Post after “2C: Beyond the Limit,” which won a Pulitzer Prize in 2020, and “Climate Solutions,” which explores the people and organizations tackling global warming. Climate Diaries will “personalize” this vertical by looking into the daily lives of people reducing their carbon footprint and living a low-waste lifestyle, Thompson said. The first diary comes from journalist and climate advocate Sophia Li, who shares her experiences traveling sustainably and choosing energy-efficient materials for a home remodel.

“We do know that younger audiences are compelled by climate coverage. They are interested in it and they want more of it,” Thompson said. 

Catering to younger audiences is also why the Post is hiring more visual journalists, the “big component” of the expansion to the climate team, Thompson said. They will work on graphics and other visuals based on climate-related data to give readers a real-time look at the state of the planet, she said. But they can also produce content for platforms like Instagram, such as vertical videos. For coverage around COP26, the Post’s visual and Instagram teams experimented with Instagram Reels, which were then also published on the Post’s website — that’s something the Post is looking to do more of for its climate stories, Thompson said.

Investing in “one of the most important stories in the world”

The AP’s dedicated climate desk would not be possible without the monetary support from the five organizations, Nordgren said, which includes the Quadrivium Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Hewlett Foundation, Walton Family Foundation and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. “The foundations’ infusion really accelerates our ability to cover these issues,” she said. “We have been over the past couple of years working fairly aggressively to think about where philanthropic support might work best for us and for climate — that’s one subject area we know that there is good alliance around.”

As for The Post, when asked about the investment the publisher is making by hiring nearly two dozen dedicated climate journalists, Thompson said: “The news value of this topic only continues to grow in importance… For the newsroom primarily we think this is one of the most important stories in the world. Why skeptics are waiting out the blockchain gold rush

The publishers that have entered the Web3 space have done so boldly, dropping collections of hundreds of NFTs or building out NFT video games to indoctrinate their audiences into this burgeoning era of technology.

But for every NFT minted, there is a skeptic posting on Twitter about how ridiculous it is that a person would spend the equivalent of thousands of dollars in cryptocurrencies to own a jpeg.

Those skeptics have a point. Despite how intoxicating the gold rush may be or how promisingly transformative blockchain technology seems, a lot of the concepts of Web3 are just that — concepts. Much of the structural backbone is still being built and the pie-in-the-sky problem-solving use cases have not been able to be put into practice, so it’s hard to get people to buy into something that doesn’t exist.

“For all the talk about Web3 being the future, there have been so [few] actual success stories, that if they really want to say this is the future of the internet, it doesn’t make any sense,” said Rod Breslau, a former journalist and an esports insider and analyst.

As a result, the sentiment that the blockchain is the future of media is not widely shared amongst the industry. Recent Digiday+ research found that about 43% (52) of 122 publishing execs surveyed said that they do not anticipate emerging blockchain technologies — including the metaverse, virtual reality, NFTs and cryptocurrencies — to have the most significant impact on their business in the next few years. Meanwhile, only about 13% (or 16) of the remaining respondents said NFTs will have the biggest effect on their business.

Alex Kantrowitz is a tech journalist and author of the Big Technology newsletter on Substack who by nature of his job must closely follow this space and is, too, concerned about the regular occurrence of scams to consider integrating NFTs or current blockchain technology into his business.

“I have too much respect for my audience to do an NFT drop with them,” said Kantrowitz. “The early stages of Web3 has been filled with so much grift and unsavory practices with NFTs in particular and I don’t want to blow the one chance I have at keeping the trust with my audience.” 

That’s not to say he doesn’t cover blockchain news. In fact, he said there are interesting applications of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that he thinks can be rather useful going forward. However, he said that as a tech reporter, he does not believe in [NFTs] and that the trend is “largely people getting taken advantage of and I certainly don’t want my audience to be in that group.”

While the possibilities of NFTs, the metaverse and crypto sound promising, the lack of execution and the veiled promises from blockchain spokespeople who stand to make a quick buck from people piling on the bandwagon are enough to keep the crypto skeptics skeptical. And what’s needed, according to Breslau, is transparency from those blockchain advocates about who benefits from the push into Web3.

“I need to see more legitimate applications for Web3 technology before I start to believe that there’s something there. But for right now, I don’t,” Kantrowitz said. – Kayleigh Barber

Emily Atkin’s HEATED newsletter goes on hiatus:
Atkin first launched HEATED on Substack in the summer of 2019 as a one-woman show, which came with a level of responsibility most journalists don’t experience when working under a publication. But two-and-a-half years later, the journalist turned editor and publication manager said she’s lost the steam and resilience to continue, for now, and in the name of mental health is taking her newsletter on hiatus.

Dow Jones adopts a firmly flexible office-return plan:
Dow Jones won’t be mandating that employees of its publications, including The Wall Street Journal, return to its offices next month, according to The New York Times. Instead, the publisher has decided to allow individual teams to sort out how to handle whether to remain remote, return to the office or adopt a hybrid approach.
